Puerto Vallarta ( May 7) – Last week’s demolition of an old shopping complex to make way for the expansion of the civic center is being cited as an excellent example of how recycled construction materials can be used.

Diego Montez, engineering manager for the city of Puerto Vallarta, stated that last week’s controlled demolition of the vacant New Horizon Shopping Center on Pueblo Street created more than 2,000 tons of debris. The debris was composed mostly of steel, glass, and concrete. It was taken from the downtown site to area recycling centers run by Lopez Recycling, Inc. The remaining non-recyclable materials were safely disposed of in a landfill.

“ Because Puerto Vallarta is a popular tourist destination, we want to show others that we care about the beauty of our city by using state-of-the-art waste-management technology that keeps heavy debris out of landfills,” said Mr. Montez yesterday.

Maria Salazar, president of the Puerto Vallarta Waste Reduction Agency, who lobbied the city council to adopt the new technology, said the city is saving money. “It makes more sense to sell most of the recyclable debris instead of paying a landfill to take it off our hands,” explained Mrs. Salazar. “ I plan on using Puerto Vallarta’s success story to teach other communities in Mexico how to recycle construction materials more efficiently.”

Similarly worth mentioning is the city’s plan to use recycled construction materials to help build the convention center’s new wing. Half of the wing will be taken up by new meeting spaces, an exhibition hall, and a food court. Construction on the wing and a much-needed parking garage will begin on May 28.
